CHAPTER 15

CRUSH

Samson offhandedly mentioned he planned to invite Meg Javits down to the station for another interview.

“No. Go to the dental office before they open. I’ve had the first appointment of the day many times, and she’s always already there when I arrive early.”

“Don’t tell me you want to come along.”

“You know me too well.”

“It’s not proper procedure to allow a civilian to snoop around someone’s property while I’m interviewing them.”

“I’ve done it before as you recall. It’s the only way I can access her memories sufficiently. It was pure luck that I could read some memories when I was here for my appointment. No one will be in until about eight, and you’ll keep her occupied, so I’ll have the run of the place.”

“But she knows you. How am I going to explain why I brought along who she believes is the primary suspect in her husband’s murder?”

It was a good question. I strained to think of a workaround.

“When I’ve shown up early for appointments, waiting to be let inside, I’ve seen her and the staff park behind the building and go in the back entrance where the offices are. So, you show up at the front door, which will still be locked, and bang on it. When she comes up front, sees who you are, and lets you in, speak with her in the waiting room. I’ll sneak in the back door and try to find memories on or around her desk. If we’re lucky, there will be something about hiring a hitman.

“Sounds highly dubious and ethically questionable. But I’ll go along, because you’ve hit some home runs for me in the past.”

“I’ll try not to let you down.”

Just as I had predicted, Mrs. Javits’s Mercedes was the only car in the employee lot behind the small medical building that housed two other offices. Samson’s banging was so loud I easily heard it back here.

I prayed she left the rear door unlocked for her employees. Thankfully, she had. I slipped in, knowing I had to hurry before the receptionist showed up.

Never having been in this rear part of the office, I looked around. There were two offices off a central open area comprising a conference table, two cubicles, and a kitchenette. Both offices had their doors open. The one on my left contained a desk that was bare, and the wall behind it was adorned with diplomas and certificates. Dr. Javits’s office. The one on my right was crowded. Extra chairs were pulled up to a desk covered with paperwork and a computer. This obviously belonged to Meg Javits.

My heart sank when I saw how many surfaces I had to scan with very little time to do it. But that’s the way psychometry worked: you had to be—here’s that word I hate—methodical.

Holding my palm above the desk, as if I were testing the heat of a stove, I moved it about, searching for powerful emotions standing out among the trivial thoughts about the business that covered every surface.
